Paul W. Dodge

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Paul Wesley Dodge, 73, of Berkeley Springs, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born April 27, 1927, in Leicester, Mass., he was the son of the late Robert and Vada Dodge.

He attended Atlantic Union College in Lancaster, Mass.

He worked as a printer until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army Band during World War II.

He was a member of Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Dodge of Berkeley Springs; one daughter, Holly Dodge of Centerville, Ohio; three sons, Nathen Dodge of Stuart, Fla., Gregory Dodge of Stow, Mass., and Jeffrey Dodge of Pittsburgh; one stepson, Ralph Hallock of Union Bridge, Md.; two sisters, Helen Beline of Detroit, and Pamela Fiederlane of Oxford, Mass.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Dodge of Lancaster.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastor Brian Jones will officiate.

The family will receive friends at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Dorothy V. Courtney

LINEBORO, Md. - Dorothy Virginia Courtney, 78, of 5322 Carroll-Warehime Road, and formerly of Williamsport, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at her home.

Born June 4, 1922, in Bell Grove, Md., she was the daughter of the late Arthur H. and Gladys Brinkman Smith.

She was a 1940 graduate of Hancock High School.

She was employed by General Motors in Martinsburg, W.Va., retiring in 1988.

She was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Williamsport American Legion Post 202 Auxiliary.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol Kershner of Westminster, Md.; a son, Gail Courtney of Lineboro; three sisters, Eleanor Little and Shirley Highbarger, both of Hagerstown, and Wilda Smith of Williamsport; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude Smith and Walter Smith.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North in Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

J. Albert Metcalfe

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - J. Albert Metcalfe, 86, of Falling Spring Nursing Home and formerly of 12731 Mount Pleasant Road, Mercersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at the home.

Born Jan. 10, 1915, in Mercersburg, he was the son of the late Welty and Blanche Myers Metcalfe.

He was a self-employed carpenter; and was a partner in Metcalfe and Witter Contractors of Mercersburg. He retired in 1980. He owned and operated Metcalfe's Car Wash of Mercersburg from 1967 to 1993.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European/African Campaign.

He was a member of Greencastle Church of the Brethren, and Seekers Sunday School Class.

He was a member and former Lion of the Year of Mercersburg Lions Club; a member of MMP and W Fire Co. of Mercersburg and the board of directors; served on Tuscarora School Board from 1963 to 1977; was an associate member of Clarence Armstrong VFW Post 6241; and Harry Lackhove American Legion Post 517, both of Mercersburg.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Esther Mae Witter Metcalfe; three daughters, Vivian L. Bowers of Chambersburg, Twyla M. Strite of Mercersburg and Suzanne K. Metcalfe of Greencastle; three sons, Dale I. Metcalfe of Mercersburg, Gary E. Metcalfe of St. Thomas, Pa. and Larry E. Metcalfe of Greencastle; a sister, Louise Thompson of Mercersburg; a brother, Myers Metcalfe of Mercersburg; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Greencastle Church of the Brethren, 36 S. Carlisle St. in Greencastle. The Revs. Harold E. Yeager and W. David Kent will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mercersburg, with military honors by Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599.

Visitation will be Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave. in Mercersburg; and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the church.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Elizabeth G. Hornbaker

WILLIAMSPORT - Elizabeth Gilbert Chaffinch Hornbaker, 95, of 16505 Virginia Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at her home.

Born Jan. 19, 1906, in Easton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Hull and Virginia Gilbert Chaffinch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John Harlan Hornbaker Sr., in 1986.

She was a member of Third Haven Friends Meeting House in Easton.
