Wildcats torch Hubs behind Weimer's 23

Tuesday's Monocacy Valley Athletic League girls basketball game between Williamsport and North Hagerstown got off to a most unusual start

continued

Warmups were delayed twice by false fire alarms, the first one resulting in an evacuation while the cause - an inadvertent elbowing of the alarm - was investigated.

As it turned out, the Wildcats were a five-alarm fire the Hubs couldn't escape.

Brooke Weimer scored 23 points and led Williamsport's fleet-footed attack to runs of 23-5 in the second quarter and 14-0 in the third for a 65-43 victory over North.

"She's the outlet person, the straw that stirs the drink," Wildcats coach Tom Dzur said. "The other kids have to run with it. They had to pick it up a notch, and in the second quarter, that's what they did."

Williamsport (13-6, 9-6) jumped out to a 10-3 lead, but North (6-11, 4-11) reeled off an 18-8 run behind Autumn Parson to take a 21-18 lead 1 minute, 5 seconds into the second quarter. Parson scored seven of her 12 points in the run.

"We played tough and hung in there until the second quarter," Hubs coach Helen Mency said. "Then we stopped playing transition defense."

The Wildcats went on the offensive, taking North turnovers and transition opportunities and turning them into layups. Williamsport's three-point deficit quickly became a 41-28 halftime lead, with Weimer having nine points and two assists in the spurt.

"We finally started realizing we needed to get in attack mode," Dzur said. "... It just snowballed."

Any intrigue left in the game was wiped out as the Wildcats scored the first 14 points of the third quarter and held the Hubs to just two points in the period, those on a Kendal Brown putback with a minute left.

"We came out flat in the third quarter, and that just compounded it," Mency said.

Lindsey Plotner had nine points and Jessica Ross added eight for Williamsport. Amanda McGhee led North with 19 points, while Parson had nine rebounds.
