Local roundup - HCC men notch 25th win



ESSEX, Md. - Brandon DeShields scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half and dished off 11 assists Monday to lift Hagerstown Community College to a 104-69 win over Essex.

The victory was HCC's 25th in 29 games, marking the seventh time in the coach Jim Brown era that the Hawks ahve won at least 25 games in a season. Four of the previous six of those teams advanced to the regional tournament.

HCC jumped off to an early 13-4 lead but allowed the Black Knights the opportunity to catch them at 19-19. The Hawks pulled away to a 50-34 halftime lead, featuring a 9-0 run to close the first half.

Girbront Gaddy led HCC with 18 points and 16 rebounds while Corey Tabron finished with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and eight rebounds.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Damien Jackson scored 23 points and Jamar Thompkins had 17 points and 14 rebounds in West Virginia Wesleyan's victory over Shepherd.

Aswan Morris added 11 points for Wesleyan, which made 17 of 18 free throws.

Kenny Cox scored 28 points and Antar Parkman had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Shepherd (11-11, 7-7).

Shepherd's Cox wins WVC honor

PRINCETON, W.Va. - Shepherd's Kenny Cox and Glenville State's Andrew Harding were named the West Virginia Conference men's basketball co-players of the week Monday.

Cox, a forward from Temple Hills, Md., had 19 points and 10 rebounds in a victory at the District of Columbia and had 27 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in a win over Davis & Elkins.

BALTIMORE - Matt Tanner had a game-high 21 points but No. 6 St. Maria Goretti came up short against Calvert Hall in the second of back-to-back games.
