Smithsburg loses 9 percent in 2001 tax setoff

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg's tax setoff from Washington County for fiscal year 2001 is 9 percent less than it was the year before.

The county setoff, also known as a tax rebate, partially reimburses municipalities for police, parks and road services they provide.

Smithsburg is getting $28,028 back, compared to $30,806 the previous year.

The city and towns in the county are receiving a smaller tax setoff this year because most growth of taxable income and the tax base occurred outside of the city and towns.

The Washington County Commissioners met with the Smithsburg Town Council and Mayor Tommy Bowers Tuesday evening to discuss the setoff and current county projects.
