Kindergarten registration Wednesday

Washington County public schools will hold kindergarten registration on Wednesday in county school during regular hours.

To register children at the school within their attendance area, parents and guardians must provide each child's birth certificate, proof of immunization, social security number and proof of Washington County residency.

Maryland state law requires any child who will be five years old on or before Dec. 31, 2001, to enroll in the kindergarten program with certain exceptions:

-- Parents who believe the child lacks the maturity necessary for kindergarten may request, in writing, a one-year waiver.

-- Upon filing their request in writing, parents may enroll their child in a full-time licensed child care center or registered family day care home, or participate in a Head Start program for 5 year olds.

--Parents may choose to instruct a child at home in compliance with state home instruction regulations.

Children who will be 4 years old by Dec. 31, 2001, may be eligible to participate in the pre-kindergarten programs at some elementary schools. To register children for pre-kindergarten, parents and guardians must provide each child's birth certificate, proof of immunization, social security number and proof of Washington County residency, as well as proof of family income. Because of limited funding and classroom space, all applicants cannot be accepted for the pre-kindergarten programs.

Maryland regulations require each student who is entering school for the first time during the 2001-2002 school year to have a physical examination prior to the first day of school. Maryland Physical Examination Forms (Health Inventory), which must be completed by a physician or health care practitioner, are available at schools and from the Washington County Board of Education's Central Administration Office, 820 Commonwealth Ave., Hagerstown.

For more information on registration or waivers, contact the school principal or the Office of the Director of Student Services, Martha Roulette, at 301-766-2961.
