Smithsburg downs Boonsboro

BOONSBORO - Smithsburg used its lightning-quick running game to ran Boonsboro out of the gym 79-48 in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League girls basketball game on Friday.

Smithsburg (14-5, 11-4) had four girls score in double figures. One of them was senior center Melanie Whitt with 10 points, all in the first half before she briefly left the game with a cut chin.

"We bounced back from our loss against Walkersville (last Tuesday)," Whitt said. "I think that we did pretty well tonight. We changed our pre-game cheer from '1-2-3 Leopards' to '1-2-3 Dominate,' because we're going to dominate from now on. That new cheer seemed to fire up the team. I banged my chin on the floor and I have to go and get stitches. I wanted to come back and play after my injury."

Katy Powell scored a team-high 16 points, while LaNitra Higgins and Eariel Gholson scored 12 points each for the Leopards. "During the last two days of practice, we re-dedicated ourselves towards playing our style of basketball," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said. "Some extra credit goes to the seniors, because they really motivate the rest of the team."
