HCC women win big

When you're hot, you're hot.

The Hagerstown Community College women's basketball team picked up its seventh straight win on Saturday night with a 66-26 victory over the CCAC/Allegheny-Pittsburgh Cougars.

After holding a 22-12 halftime advantage, the Hawks (17-7) broke the game open with a red-hot second half as they outscored the Cougars (14-3), 44-14.

HCC coach Marlys Palmer was glad that the Hawks were able to avenge a 60-42 loss to the Cougars back on Dec. 28.

"That was a 58-point turnaround from our previous loss to them," Palmer said. "I think that my players are playing real well as a team right now."

Robin Curley had 15 points, 10 blocked shots, eight rebounds and four steals for HCC. Vennece Fowlkes added 14 rebounds and 13 points for the Hawks. Fowlkes had 11 of her rebounds in the second half.

"That win was what we needed," Curley said. "We knew that if we could hold them from scoring, then we would win the game. We just ran our transition game. We had a lot of fast breaks."

Brooke Russ and Emily Middlekauff grabbed eight rebounds each for the Hawks.

HCC had to overcome a few problems. Rachel Bachtell and Fowlkes were in foul trouble in the first half. Russ suffered a dislocated shoulder, Naomi Mason dislocated her finger, Jade Whipp got a jammed finger and Amy Fischer has been out indefinitely with a stress fracture in her foot.

"It was remarkable that we dominated the game, even though we had a few injuries," Palmer said.
