Early morning traffic stop leads to drug charges


Stopped for running a red light at 2 a.m. Thursday, a Smithsburg man found himself in custody and charged with serious drug offenses, according to Maryland State Police.

Michael Lynn Rideout, 21, of D-2, Washington Court, was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, driving while intoxicated as well as the red light charge.

Trooper 1st Class George Fockler pulled a 1990 Pontiac over at Baltimore and South Potomac streets. A search turned up just under a half pound of marijuana (182 grams) in the car and on the driver Fockler said.

Rideout was released on $10,000 bond.

Hot water heater causes fire in apartment building


A hot water heater at a Londontowne apartment building in Hagerstown caused a small fire Thursday morning, firefighters said.

The fire at 906 Queen Anne's Court went out when Funkstown firefighters cut the power to the hot water heater around 8 a.m.

Firefighters from Hagerstown and Mount Aetna also were at the scene.

Fire department probing blaze at recording studio


The Hagerstown Fire Department was investigating a fire that broke out at a Hagerstown recording studio Thursday evening.

The 6 p.m. fire at Talkin Trees at 84 W. Washington St. caused minor fire damage and moderate smoke damage, said Capt. Randy Myers.

He said three people were inside the building when the fire broke out but got out safely.

Employees at the recording studio said they would be open for business today and the 9 p.m. reggae dance will be held as scheduled.
