Bond money sought for work around new court building

The Hagerstown City Council Tuesday authorized staff to work with the local delegation to the General Assembly in preparing an application for $275,000 in state bond bill money to help pay for downtown improvements around the new district court building and The Maryland Theatre.

The city and the Washington County Commissioners have pledged $325,000 each to widen the alley around the new court building so it can accommodate two-way traffic, relocate utilities, purchase and demolish the Unikote building and construct a parking lot on the Unikote site.

The state funds would be used to brick the alleys beside The Maryland Theatre and The Plum restaurant, and for property acquisition and site preparation for a proposed $10.2 million performing and visual arts center.
