HCC uses defense as an offensive weapon to beat Catonsville

CATONSVILLE, Md. - The Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team took some time to take care of business on Monday.

And then business took care of itself for the Hawks.

HCC changed its defensive look, relying on just plain ol' halfcourt, man-to-man defense to methodically pull away to a 86-70 victory over Community College of Baltimore-Catonsville .

The 16-point win had a vastly more comfortable feel for HCC (22-4), especially since the Hawks needed a last-second score by Girbront Gaddy to pull out the home win 12 days ago.

HCC shelved its "press anything that moves" philosophy and adopted one more condusive to rebounding and inside play to mow down the Cardinals.

It was HCC's sixth straight win since losing to Allegany on Jan. 21. The Hawks are also 11-2 since five players were ruled academically ineligible.

The Hawks held Catonsville to just one shot per possession - the Cardinals didn't get an offensive rebound until 4:46 remaining before intermission - and defended against quick, easy scores.

The Hawks trailed 15-12 before using a 30-5 run over a 3-minute, 30-second span strictly off the rebounds from Catonsville's 3-point misses to assume a 42-20 lead.

HCC led 47-30 at the half as Corey Tabron scored 14 of his 18 points and Julius Gause added 10 of his 17 points in the first half. Eric Branham broke the game open by hitting consecutive 3s.

Catonsville tried to get inside on HCC in the second half, but soon returned to its long-distanced ways. The Cardinals were never able to get closer than nine points of the lead.

Four Hawks finished with double figures. Branham had 12 while Jerome Goodman added 11. HCC's frontcourt accounted for 39 of the Hawks' 86 points.

Tabron added 11 rebounds and four assists to his team-high total without committing a turnover. Gause and Gaddy added eight rebounds each while Gause added four assists.
