Man shot to death at county apartment complex

An unidentified man was shot to death Sunday evening at a Washington County apartment complex.

The man died from a single gunshot wound in an upstairs unit at Robinwood Court off Robinwood Boulevard, said Lt. Douglas W. Mullendore of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

The shooting occurred in an apartment in building 20209, which houses units 201 through 212.

The man, who did not live at that apartment, died at the scene, Mullendore said.

When asked for details around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Mullendore said that the investigation was still in its preliminary stages.

Around 8:30 p.m. a call came over the police scanner for a shooting at Robinwood with the assailant still at the scene.

A short time later, at least 12 Sheriff's Department and Maryland State Police cruisers were parked outside the two-story red brick, apartment complex.

Officers taped off the entrance to the building and outside stairs leading to the apartment but left the front door of the unit open.

Police could be seen looking around the apartment and milling about at bottom of the outside stairs.

Around 9:15 p.m. police officers escorted a handcuffed woman outside the home and placed her in an unmarked car. She was questioned in the car for about a half an hour. Police then brought out a handcuffed man from the apartment. He began sobbing as he was also placed in a police cruiser.

Mullendore identified the man and woman as residents of the apartment where the shooting took place.

He said they had not been arrested at that time but were handcuffed for police safety.

Neighbors who gathered outside to watch the police investigation said the neighborhood was generally quiet.

One man said the couple who was taken into custody had only recently moved in.
