Three area wrestling teams - North Hagerstown, Walkersville and Williamsport - have qualified for the Maryland West Regional duals on Wednesday.

North Hagerstown, despite seeded No. 2, will become the first Washington County school to host a state dual meet championship as No. 1 Paint Branch, No. 3 Damascus and No. 4 Walter Johnson come to town for 3A/4A matches.

Meanwhile, at Northern Garrett, Walkersville earned a No. 2 seed and will meet Beall while No. 4 Williamsport will wrestle top-seeded Northern Garrett in 1A/2A action.

In both cases, first round matches are scheduled for 5:30 with the championship matches following, approximately at 7:30.

Looking back at how easily Paint Branch won the Hub Cup and how solid a performance Damascus had in its second-place showing, host North Hagerstown might be considered the underdog.

Hub coach Greg Slick concedes nothing.

"I don't know we're an underdog,'' he said. "We all know Paint Branch has a good team. They're pretty solid.

"We are the defending West champs. I don't know if that puts more pressure on us or not. It's a great honor to host the event.''

North won 3A/4A West last year and 1A/2A the year before and has qualified five of six years in the eight-year history of the event.

North's top wrestlers include Wayne Boward (22-0 at 145 pounds), Jimmy Starkey (16-0 at 135), Mike Wagner (24-3 at 103), Steve Fravel (24-3 at 119), Dustin McDonough (21-6 at 152) and Chad Coles (21-4 at 275).

Damascus, which defeated Walter Johnson 33-21 and lost to Paint Branch 37-22, features nine 20-win wrestlers including Ted Humberg (103), Scott Humberg (112), Steve Bennett (19-4), Stewart Wyne (130), Dale Kerns (135), Chris Thompson (140), Jim Creegan (145) and Greg Cohen (160).

Paint Branch features Hub Cup champs Billy Smith (135), Chris Booker (140), Adam James (152, outstanding wrestler winner at Hub Cup), Chris Miller (160) and Kenny O'Sullivan (171), as well as Antonio Williams (112), second in state at 103 last year.

Northern Garrett, led by Blake Huber (112), Brandon Kamp (145) and Mark Wolf (171) is the clear favorite to win the West title.

Williamsport is led by tri-captains Steve Stone (22-1 at 130), Sean Vancour (19-7 at 140) and Ryan McDonald (23-2 at 275), as well as Matt Allen (23-1 at 189), Brian Forsythe (20-7 at 103), Devin Hewitt (19-7 at 112), Corey Leggett 20-5 at 119) and Travis Brown (17-6 at 152).

Walkersville's No. 2 seeding may be a surprise of sorts. The Lions finished third losing to first-place Middletown at the Catoctin Duals in December and lost 45-22 to Williamsport last month. The Lions, though, blasted Middletown last week.

Among the Lions' top wrestlers are Danny Crum (125), Jason Gladhill (130), Derek Krantz (140), Ed Asbill (125) and freshmen Dan Caywood (112) and Jimmy Francis (152).

As of January 16, Walkersville was well behind in the 1A/2A West standings, but leap frogged Southern Garrett, Fort Hill, Urbana, Beall and Williamsport.
