By ANDREW SCHOTZ / Staff Writer

Thirty-one people registered as sex offenders are living in Washington County, according to Maryland's Crimes Against Children and Sex Offenders Registry.

Twenty live in Hagerstown, four in Williamsport, three in Clear Spring, two in Boonsboro and one each in Hancock and Sharpsburg.

One person lives in Allegany County and works in Hancock.

Another person lives in Knoxville in Frederick County, but is registered in Washington County.

Twenty-three of the 47 offenders registered in Frederick County have addresses in Frederick.

Four are in Brunswick, three in Ijamsville, two each in Middletown and Woodsboro and one apiece in Thurmont, Myersville, Jefferson, Walkersville, Adamstown, Monrovia, Mount Airy, New Market, New Midway and Fort Detrick.

Two people in Baltimore and one in Montgomery County are also registered in Frederick County.

Another offender lives in Montgomery County but works in Frederick County.

Almost all of the registrants are considered child sex offenders.

The West Virginia State Police Web site lists 20 offenders living in Berkeley County - 11 in Martinsburg, three each in Inwood and Hedgesville, two in Falling Waters and one in Bunker Hill.

Jefferson County has 19 offenders listed. Seven live in Harpers Ferry, four in Ranson, three apiece in Charles Town and Kearneysville and one apiece in Shenandoah Junction and Summit Point.

Sixteen offenders are listed in Morgan County - 13 in Berkeley Springs and three in Great Cacapon.

Almost all of the crime victims were family members or acquaintances, the Web site says.

Some crimes were committed out of state, and the offenders registered when they moved to West Virginia.

There are 56 people registered as sex offenders in Franklin County, Pa., and six in Fulton County. Police can release information about only two of the offenders, both in Franklin County.

Pennsylvania law allows information about only sexually violent predators or sex offenders from out-of-state to be given out.

Both Franklin County residents committed their crimes out of state. One man, now living in Fayetteville, committed the Pennsylvania equivalent of "indecent liberties with a child" while he was in North Carolina.

The other man now lives in Shippensburg. The Pennsylvania equivalent of his crime is "indecent assault," but police could not provide the state where the crime occurred.
