Ruffin nets 51 in Broadfording's win

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

It would be a huge understatement to say that 6-foot-4 senior center Vanessa Ruffin had a good game on Thursday night.

The fact of the matter is that Ruffin had a great game for the Broadfording Christian Academy Lions.

Ruffin, who scored 55 points in a game last week, scored 51 points Thursday by making 21 field goals and sinking 9 of 13 free throws. Ruffin also blocked four shots and pulled down 19 rebounds - 17 of those boards coming on the defensive side.

Ruffin's long list of accomplishments helped the Lions defeat the St. Maria Goretti Gaels 70-58 in Washington County private school action.

"It wasn't easy," Ruffin said. "It takes a lot of work. It wasn't just me; it was the rest of the team, too. They worked to give me the ball and I had to work to get it in. Our coach has been telling us, since the beginning of the season, that we can be successful - if we keep working hard. So, that is what we are going to do. My coach has had a lot to do with my success. He helps me to keep my head in the game."

Broadfording coach Dana Gonzales had nothing but praise for Ruffin.

"We figured that she can be a force," Gonzales said. "We thought that if we could handle their press and get the ball down inside to Vanessa, then we thought that we had a good shot of winning this game. She is definitely a Division I prospect. Several Division I schools have shown interest in Vanessa. A lot of small schools have called about her, too."

Gonzales also gave credit to senior point guard B'nai Holt, who finished with 11 assists and four steals. Holt scored all 10 of her points for the Lions during the fourth quarter, which included a 6-for-9 performance from the free throw line.

"B'nai does a good job of handling the ball and passing it around," Gonzales added. "She is the catalyst for this team. She is my little general."

Senior forward Michelle Moore made six steals for the Lions (14-7).

Lauren Costello led Goretti (12-9) with 24 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. Brett Stone collected 20 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Gaels.

Broadfording finished 20-for-29 from the free throw line.
