Mercersburg puts bad weekend in past vs. Saints

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The Mercersburg Academy girls basketball team wasn't knocking St. James as the two teams met for the third time this season on Wednesday afternoon - but, boy, were the Blue Storm glad to see the Saints.

"We feel we've improved a lot," Mercersburg guard Sarah Nusairat said. "It's a little more fair when we can play a team like St. James, some equal to us."

The Blue Storm beat the Saints for the third time this season, 46-30, behind 20 points from Nusairat, wiping away a disastrous weekend in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League against two New Jersey powerhouses.

"It's so much nicer to have games like this, or with Hedgesville," Mercersburg coach Karl Muller said. "Whether we win or lose isn't important, but we can compete ... or play against teams that are like quad-A in Pennsylvania."

Instead, one of the area's more relaxed rivalries ensued. The two boarding schools don't have lots of loud, screaming fans or a bitter hatred, just a lot of respect and two coaches that are friends.

Friends or no, though, Muller got the best of St. James (5-9) and coach Ted Camp again using an abnormal 1-3-1 half-court trap and a decisive rebounding edge.

"Just way too many turnovers today," Camp said of his team's 23 miscues. "The thing is, we're not tall enough to be good on the boards and not small enough to be quick. We're kind of a bunch of 'tweeners."

Mercersburg (5-8) left the Saints between a rock and a hard place. Up 16-14 midway through the second quarter, the Blue Storm closed the first half on an 8-2 run, keyed by six points from Nusairat.

"We figured we could maybe freak them out a little bit," Nusairat said. "We varied it on and off and it worked.

"It just feels good to win again. Last weekend was really frustrating. I couldn't even get a shot off. No one could."
