Public hearing draws no comment

A rezoning request from the Bowman Group drew no public comments during a hearing before the Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday.

The Bowman Group has asked that about 11 acres along South Potomac Street be rezoned from R-3 residential to C-2 commercial. The property is near Oak Ridge Drive and is across from E. Russell Hicks Middle School.

The city Planning Commission on Jan 10 voted to recommend against approval of the rezoning request.

Matt Davis, a city planner, said the Planning Commission determined that a mistake in the original zoning was not proven and that commercial zoning there would go against the city's comprehensive plan.

Tuesday, Bowman representatives said their request for a rezoning of the property is based more on a change in the neighborhood.

Don Bowman said Tuesday that he had no specific plans for the property, but he expected some sort of retail business would go there.

City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman said the Mayor and City Council probably will discuss the rezoning request during a Feb. 13 or Feb. 20 meeting. He said council votes on the requests would not be taken until after those meetings were held.

Written comments on the request will be accepted until Feb. 9, City Clerk Anna Pennesi said. Comments should be sent to the City Clerk at Hagerstown City Hall, 1 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown MD 21740.
