Purse snatched at shopping center


For the second time in recent weeks, a woman walking through a shopping center parking lot has been targeted for robbery by the female occupants of a car.

Hagerstown City Police said the victim, in her mid-60s, was approached at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday as she walked from her vehicle toward Office Max at The Centre at Hagerstown on U.S. 40 west.

The passenger asked her help with directions and then grabbed her purse. The vehicle sped away, taking the purse and knocking the victim to the ground, according to Lt. Gary Spielman.

The victim had a cut on her left forearm but didn't require hospital care.

The vehicle was a beige 1980s Escort-like model.

Resident thwarts burglary attempt


A resident of the 200 block of Devonshire Road apparently thwarted a would-be burglar at 3 a.m. Wednesday when he got up to investigate a loud banging noise and spotted someone outside his kitchen door.

Hagerstown City Police said the fleeing burglar left behind a pry tool as the homeowner turned on the kitchen light.

Hagerstown man faces drug charges


FREDERICK, Md. - A Hagerstown man was taken into custody late Tuesday in Frederick, Md., on charges of selling drugs to undercover police officers in the John Hanson Apartments complex.

Donald Marcell Rivers, 35, of the 400 block of North Jonathan Street, was charged with distribution of cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

The incident occurred at 11:04 p.m., according to Frederick City Police drug enforcement officers.

Burglars try to break into North End home


Thieves attempted to get into the North End home of a 90-year-old woman over the weekend, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

The victim, who lives in the 12900 block of Cathedral Avenue, called for a deputy just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputy 1st Class Johnny Marshall discovered pry marks around a rear garage window and door but no entry was made. Damage was $50.

Wheel stolen from pickup truck


A 14-inch aluminum wheel was stolen from a pickup truck parked at Cavetown Liquors on Tuesday, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

The incident occurred at 11905 Mapleville Road.

Hedgesville, W.Va., man faces drug charges


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 19-year-old Hedgesville man was charged with a drug violation Tuesday night after Martinsburg City Police found him in a vehicle in the Old Courthouse Square shopping plaza.

Luca Deluca was to be arraigned Wednesday, police said. Bond information was unavailable.

Police responded to a 10:48 p.m. call about a suspicious vehicle beside a business at the plaza.

During the investigation, officers found several individually wrapped baggies of marijuana, a smoking device and $507 in small currency, police alleged.

Fence chargers stolen from Newcomer Farm


SHARPSBURG - Two solar-powered electric fence chargers were stolen from a home along Antietam National Battlefield, according to a park ranger.

Ranger Todd Stanton said the equipment was taken from the Newcomer Farm along Md. 34 between Jan. 26 and Jan. 29.

The chargers are valued at $350.
