Saxophonist Euge Groove, who grew up in Hagerstown as Steven Eugene Grove, has been nominated for the Oasis/Smooth Jazz Prism Award, the category for the Up and Coming Artist of the Year.

The awards will be presented Saturday, March 3, at the Chicago Theater in Chicago. This is the second year Oasis Awards have been presented to the best artists, producers, festivals, venues and radio stations in Smooth Jazz.

Groove, who is married with three children, became "Euge" when his in-laws shortened Eugene, his middle name. He frequently was called "Mr. Groove" on European tours.

A 1980 graduate of South Hagerstown High School, he studied classical saxophone but turned to pop-instrumental music. He has toured or recorded with Tower of Power, Eurythmics, Huey Lewis and the News, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Richard Marx, Joe Cocker and Tina Turner. He had several solo spots on Turner's "Twenty Four Seven" farewell tour last fall. On Wednesday, Feb. 14, Groove will open for Al Jarreau at the Beacon Theater in New York City.

Groove recorded his self-titled album in his home studio in 1999 and put some of the tracks on the Internet at www.mp3.com. It was No. 1 on the site for six weeks, and he later signed with Warner Bros. records. "Euge Groove," the CD, can be ordered from Borders Books, Music, Video and Caf, and Music For a Song in Hagerstown.

Euge Groove and his wife, Bane, posed for the CD cover photo.

With 27 weeks on the R&R NAC Smooth Jazz chart, "Vinyl," the CD's first single, was the chart's longest running single. It ranked No. 24 for the year, the highest debut single, according to Groove's Web site at www. eugegroove.com. The album also finished at No. 24 in the Gavin year-end "Top 50" chart.

Radio and Records (R&R) magazine named Groove

No. 1 "breakout artist" for the year, and he was named Debut Artist of 2000 by Art Good's nationally syndicated radio show "JazzTrax."
