Cougars add to Rebels' ill feelings

By CURT HORNBECKER / Staff Correspondent

Just about the time the South Hagerstown girls basketball team gets one problem under control, a couple more seem to crop up.

After hitting just 3 of 14 free throws against Walkersville last week, the Rebels improved dramatically in that area. But shear numbers and team-wide illness created additional challenges Tuesday night as Catoctin rolled to a 64-30 Monocacy Valley Athletic League victory, sending the reeling Rebels to their eighth consecutive setback.

"They're all sick with the flu, basically," said South coach Patty Leazier with a cough, "and it's hard to keep fresh legs when they're all sick."

To make matters worse, just seven players dressed for the Rebels, and Catoctin made 18 of 34 shots in the first half, including four 3-pointers.

"Our kids are shooting very well from the perimeter right now," said Cougars coach Tracey Kelley. "(Opposing defenses) realize they can't single out just on player, and that makes defensive strategies harder."

Eleven turnovers - a problem area yet to be rectified by the Rebels (1-12, 1-11) - allowed Catoctin to reel off the last 11 first-quarter points. The Cougars (8-6, 8-3) stretched their 18-4 lead after eight minutes to 41-12 at the end of the half behind Cyndi Benjamin's 11 points and seven from Monica Cherry.

Eight of the Cougars' 18 first-half field goals came from outside the paint, forcing South to extend its 2-3 zone, which opened things up inside.

"We don't have the numbers to play man-to-man," said Leazier. "We have to do things to make sure the girls don't get too tired, so they can finish the game."

Benjamin was the only player to record double figures offensively for Catoctin with 19 points.
