Rockets girls jet to higher plane against Blue Devils

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The look of relief on the face of James Buchanan's Mandy Myers was more than obvious. It was matched by a look of frustration from Greencastle-Antrim coach Doug Stuart.

Both had seen a golden opportunity during Tuesday night's Mid Penn Colonial showdown, and Myers had taken it for the No. 4 Rockets.

The junior guard went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final 49 seconds, and JB took control of the division's second-half race with a 48-43 victory.

"I was just afraid I was going to miss again," said Myers, who missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 82 seconds to play. "I just couldn't believe everyone yelling ... but I put them in."

The Rockets (12-5, 4-0) led from start to finish after Leah Price opened the scoring with a 3-pointer. Greencastle (9-11, 4-1) trailed by 12 two minutes into the second half, then rattled off a 10-0 run to make it a 37-35 game and set up a nip-and-tuck finish.

"We came alive and were within two," Stuart said. "But there were times we didn't even get a shot. We'd stop them ... I wonder how many times that happened."

The answer was his question was four - but perhaps the most costly was the one time the Rockets responded to a Greencastle bucket with one of their own.

The Blue Devils opened the fourth quarter with an Alicia Thompson perimeter jumper to make it 38-37, but the Rockets responded with a bank 3 by Becky Porter to make it 41-37.

"That was key for us," JB coach John Lum said. "We hadn't scored for awhile before that. But we found the key. Sometimes you win ugly, and sometimes you win pretty."

Early on, the Rockets nearly ran Greencastle out of the building, using full-court outlet passes to beat the Blue Devils to their early lead. That was eventually clogged up by ball pressure on the defensive boards and more trailers.

Thompson finished with 16 points, Jillian Leedy added 12 points and Tamyra Toth had 14 rebounds for Greencastle.

"Give Greencastle credit," Lum said. "This game was like being on the highway in the first half, and then hitting a dirt road in the second half for us."

Greencastle just barely got left in the dust, thanks to a huge effort from the Rockets' lesser lights. Price is the team's leading scorer and Lori Stauder is its inside presence, but the play of Porter, Myers and Tonya Angle proved to be the difference.

"It's nice because you can rely on everybody," Myers said. "It's good that you can do something at the end and help everybody out."
