Children's Council abolished

The Washington County Children's Council has been abolished, following a vote of its board.

Under a prior order of the governor, all Maryland counties created children's councils, said Charles Wainwright, president of the council for the last three years. He was not sure when the governor's order was issued.

But three years ago the governor rescinded the mandate and said the counties could use their Local Management Boards to fill the council's roles instead, Wainwright said.

All counties except three did so, he said. Washington County continued to try to have both agencies, he said.

But that has stretched people too thin, he said. So it was decided last week to merge its responsibly with the county local management board, which changed its name previously to the Washington County Community Partnership.

Council members can serve on boards and committees of the latter program.

Children's Council may have received its most attention for its Youth of the Month awards program, in which students were honored by the Washington County Commissioners.

That program will continue, with the Community Partnership program handing the logistics, said its executive director, John Budesky.

Other council programs will also continue at Community Partnership, he said.
