Hedgesville student wins trip to national event

A Hedgesville, W.Va., student will be heading to San Antonio, Texas, this March to compete in the National Craft Olympics after becoming the top winner of this week's local Skills Olympics.

Darren Rebuck, who works for Tri-M Electric, took first place in the electrical division of the Skills Olympics held Saturday at Washington County Technical High School, said Joan Warner, executive director for Associated Builders & Contractors Inc.'s Cumberland Valley Chapter.

To be eligible for the all-expenses paid trip, Rebuck had to score at least 85 percent on a written test given last week, said Will Seilhamer, chairman of the ABC chapter's educational trust.

In the electrical division:

- Richard Hopkins, of Hagerstown and Tri-M Electric, placed second.

- Ryan Farris, of Hancock and New Spectrum, placed third.

In the carpentry division:

- Brett Brown, of Frederick, Md., and Morgan Keller Inc., placed first.


- Steve Snider, of Waynesboro, Pa., and GRC General Contractor, placed second.

- Dave Carbaugh, of Chambersburg, Pa., and Waynesboro Construction, placed third.

In the plumbing division:

- Charles Getson, of Deer Park, Md., and Heiligs Plumbing, placed first.

- Rob Johnston, of Oakland, Md., and Heiligs Plumbing, placed second.

- Lonnie Folk, of Oakland, and Heiligs Plumbing, placed third.

In the heating, ventilation and air conditioning division:

- Merle Vaughn, of Hagerstown and Don Hoffacker's Heating & Air, placed first.

- Clint Schiffhauer, of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., and SAIC, placed second.

- Ronald Keilholtz, of Mont Alto, Pa., and Shifler Electrical, placed third.
