BERMUDIAN SPRINGS, Pa. - Matt Piper scored 18 points, handed out eight assists and made three steals to lead James Buchanan to a 52-45 win over Bermudian Springs on Saturday.

JB (8-10) pulled away with a 22-7 third quarter. John Sheppard scored 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter, Piper added eight points.

BOONSBORO - Jason Knicley scored 25 points, including 10 of 11 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, leading Williamsport over Boonsboro in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game on Friday night.

Adam McAllister had 14 rebounds for Williams (4-9, 3-7).

Adam Miller scored 25 points for Boonsboro (7-6, 4-6).

Mercersburg loses three

The Blue Storm boys lost twice over the weekend, while the girls also lost their only matchup.

Ian Thompson and Mike Stark both had singles victories in Mercersburg's 5-2 loss to Blair Academy (N.J.) before a 7-0 loss at Potomac School (Va.). Mercersburg's girls also lost to Potomac, 8-1. Camilla Lancaster had the only victory.

Jefferson defends AVL title

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Jefferson won nine of 11 events, including a pair by Missy Lancaster, to win its fourth consecutive Apple Valley League championship.

The Cougars scored 117 points to easily outdistance Hedgesville with 40. Martinsburg finished with 28 points and St. Maria Goretti had 23.

Lancaster won the 50-yard freestyle in 28.00 seconds and the 100 free in 1:02.80.

Kempel wins twice

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Michael Kempel won two of six events for Jefferson in a non-scoring meet.

Kempel won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:11.27 and the 500 in 5:37.34.

Gowda, Palmer win titles

LANDOVER, Md. - Vik Gowda of Hagerstown Community College won the men's shot put with a distance of 46 feet, 3 inches, at the 2001 Maryland Elite Grand Prix Invitational.

Lee Palmer won the men's pole vault with a career-best 12-5 1/2.

Marques Sneed finished fifth in the 400-meter run in 51.17 seconds. Kim Mason took second place in the 1,500 in a personal-best 4:05.76. Alex McAbee took fourth in the 1,500 (4:12.98). Ali Wimbush finished sixth in the 60 (7.35).
