Greencastle girls edge Waynesboro

Jami Heefner deserves some credit, too.

Sure, Alicia Thompson and Liz Rock combined for nine of Greencastle-Antrim's 15 fourth-quarter points, and Michelle Mentzer spurred a Blue Devils defense that limited Waynesboro to just two free throws in the final five minutes.

But it was Heefner, despite not seeing any game action, who passed the ice water that was running through Tamyra Toth's veins as she cooly drilled a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to give Greencastle a Houdini-like 49-48 Mid Penn Colonial Division victory Friday night.

"I was nervous," said Toth of her only trip to the foul line all night.

"We were all going home battered and bruised, and wanted to make them for the team."

With Waynesboro (8-11, 1-3) clinging to a one-point lead and 11 seconds left, Mentzer hurried the ball up the floor and took advantage of Toth's screen at midcourt when Dee Brown mowed down Toth, sending the senior to the line.

"We practice that a little bit," said Blue Devils coach Doug Stuart. "Setting that screen was (Toth's) idea. She did that on her own."

Through the first three periods, the Maidens' transition game caused huge problems for Greencastle (9-9, 4-0), with Kira Mowen and Jana Reitz combining for 25 of their 29 points.

But a defensive adjustment shut down the running game, and putting Mentzer on Mowen limited Waynesboro's leading scorer to just two points in the final 12 minutes.

"We just broke down a little bit," said Maidens coach John Lewkowicz. "We should have been more patient down the stretch. We've lost two like that this week. If the games were 10 seconds shorter, we would have won two."

Facing a 10-point deficit early in the fourth period, the Blue Devils reeled off an 11-2 run keyed by five straight points by Thompson.

Reitz hit a pair of free throws with 31 seconds left, but Rock retaliated with a driving layup 12 seconds later, before a Waynesboro turnover - one of five the quarter - set up the final play.
