Hawks define the word blowout

BY BILL STERNER / Staff Correspondent

Buried somewhere deep beneath the avalanche of points Hagerstown Community College's women's basketball team scored in its 93-24 rout of Allegany on Friday, Marlys Palmer still believes her team is in offensive transition.

"We have had our problems, especially scoring," the HCC coach said. "And even though we played better tonight, we have trouble shooting, getting psyched up and communicating sometimes."

The Hawks did a great job camoflauging any of those concerns as they hit the floor running from the beginning of the game.

HCC (11-4) scored the first 29 points of the game off of an aggressive trapping defense that was simply too much for the Trojans to handle. South Hagerstown graduate Emily Middlekauff had half of her career high 20 points in the first 10 minutes as the Hawks set a tempo that would prove far too fast for Allegany.

While Palmer stopped short of giving the Hawks' offense a clean bill of health, HCC's shooting woes were cured by a 38-for-77 performance.

"I am really surprised. Happy, but still surprised," Palmer said about the outcome. "In the past, no matter the talent level, (Allegany) has played us tough. This was really not what I expected."

The Hawks had a 49-6 halftime lead, and in the second half, HCC pushed the lead to 70-10 at the 11 minute mark, stealing the ball seven straight times and converting in transition.

HCC finished with 28 steals and outrebounded Allegany, 39-11.
