Clear Spring a good Betts

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

CLEAR SPRING - Sabrina Betts brought her outside shooting, her teammates provided solid defense and rebounding, and Clear Spring left with a 'W'.

Betts, a senior, had 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and five steals as the Blazers defeated Berkeley Springs 40-33 in an Apple Valley League game on Friday.

"Defense and rebounding were definitely the two biggest keys in winning that game," Betts said.

Betts was glad that she was able to help Clear Spring (2-12, 1-2) with her crucial 3-pointers.

"I was open and I was ready to shoot," Betts added. "The coach said, 'If you have an open shot, then you shoot it.'"

"Sabrina Betts had a great game," Blazers coach Jeff Hall said. "I am accustomed to Sabrina scoring that many points. Sabrina made three clutch 3-pointers."

Crystal Bush scored a season-high nine points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Blazers. Allison Gozora added 11 rebounds and five steals, while Stacey Yeakle had six rebounds for Clear Spring.

"We were boxing out and rebounding good," Betts said. "If we didn't rebound that good, then we definitely would not have pulled out the win. We played as a team."

"We played very good defense and we rebounded quite well," Hall said. "Crystal Bush and Allison Gozora did an excellent job on the boards.

"Berkeley Springs is a good shooting team, but we had our hands in their faces all the time," Hall added. "When they missed, we got the boards. They didn't get too many second and third shots."

Stephanie Bracken had 11 rebounds, Megan Zahnow added five assists and reserve Megan Close scored a team-high eight points for Berkeley Springs (2-12, 0-4).

"We were 5-for-20 from the foul line," Berkeley Springs coach Dale McCumbee said. "That is the fourth time that has happened to us this year. If we just shoot 50 percent from the foul line, then we are right there with them. Clear Spring fought hard and hit the shots. They came out all fired up."
