Washington County will pay for a memorial plaque honoring two Washington County men killed in the USS Cole explosion.

The memorial will honor Patrick Roy of Keedysville and Craig Wibberley of Williamsport, shipmates who were killed Oct. 12 in an attack on the USS Cole. Both were 19.

The plan for the plaque was developed by the Joint Veterans Council.

Council President Jim Sprecher explained the idea to the Washington County Commissioners during their Tuesday meeting.

Sprecher asked the commissioners to spend $1,180 for the plaque and the commissioners unanimously agreed. The price includes installation.

The plan is to have a dedication ceremony for the memorial plaque on Memorial Day, Sprecher said.

He said the plaque will be placed at Martin L. "Marty" Snook Memorial Park in Halfway.

The plaque will say, in part, in memory of Roy and Wibberley, "who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country ... from the grateful citizens of Washington County."

The families have been contacted and are supportive of the memorial plan, Sprecher said.
