Spartans finish Hancock sweep

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

HANCOCK - After Hancock scored 21 points during the first quarter, McConnellsburg's defense starved the Panthers into submission.

The Spartans tightened up on the defensive end, giving up only 31 points to Hancock in the last three quarters as McConnellsburg came back from an early 17-7 deficit for a 64-52 victory Tuesday night in a high school boys basketball game.

"Our defense and our foul shooting helped us pull out this game," McConnellsburg coach Loren Herring said. "This seems to be the story of our season so far. Our guys have a lot of hustle on defense. Our guys showed some character in coming from behind to win this game."

McConnellsburg (8-8) made 15 of 22 free throws in the game, including 13 of 17 in the fourth quarter.

Steve Weller scored 18 points, while Mike Hill added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Spartans. Dane Pollock scored 12 points, Josh Strait grabbed eight rebounds and Jordan Ott had five assists for McConnellsburg.

The Spartans limited Hancock (3-7) to just one shot during several key situations in the game, using a size advantage over Hancock on the boards.

"We have been doing a very good job of rebounding lately," Herring added. "We have been working on boxing out underneath the boards. Our guys are starting to see that they can be successful if they can limit the other team to just one shot."

Six-foot-five junior center Brandon Fling. had team-high totals of 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots for Hancock.

Chris Wills had 14 points and five assists, while Josh Wills and Danny Keefer added five assists each for the Panthers.

"I thought that McConnellsburg held their composure," Hancock coach Jeff Spielman said. "They moved the ball around pretty well in the fourth quarter and they found the open people."
