SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg girls basketball team did the dozens to Clear Spring to open up Monday night's game.

No, not the bit when you rank on a friend in a humerous manner, but by scoring the first 12 points of the game.

Sophomore Katy Powell, junior Michelle Feiser and junior Eariel Gholson scored four points each during the first two minutes, 14 seconds of the game to help the Leopards leap to a 12-0 advantage.

That paved the way for No. 7 Smithsburg to get a 59-41 victory over the Clear Spring Blazers in a Washington County high school game.

Powell finished with a game-high 17 points and four steals for Smithsburg (10-3).

"We like to start out strong and build our momentum," Powell said. "We like to take the other team out of the game early. We like to give ourselves a little cushion, so we can have a little leeway at the end of the game. I think that we are improving with every practice and with every game. I hope that we peak in the playoffs, when we need it the most. All of the players have a common goal: to win."

Feiser collected nine points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Leopards. Jenelle Stouffer scored eight points, while Gholson added eight points and six rebounds for Smithsburg. Emily Small grabbed six rebounds and Melanie Whitt had four assists for the Leopards.

"We used pressure defense, we tried to double-team and we tried to trap the ball right at the very beginning," Smithsburg coach Jimmy Powell said. "That helped us to get off to a good start tonight. We got some easy transition baskets off of our press at the beginning of the game."

Desiree Blankenship scored 14 points, Allison Gozora added nine rebounds and Stacey Yeakle had eight rebounds for Clear Spring (1-11).

"When Smithsburg gets the ball, they are off to the races," Clear Spring coach Jeff Hall said.
