Elliott bows out

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Franklin County Commissioner Warren Elliott said this week in a release that he's not interested in U.S. Rep. Bud Shuster's 9th District congressional seat.

The Republican, who serves as County Commission chairman, said in a letter dated Jan. 19 to Allen Twigg, chairman of the Franklin County Republican Committee, "While recognizing that this window of opportunity is open for me, and that, with the overwhelming outpouring of support and encouragement that has been expressed to me from my family, friends, business, political and local government officials, (and that) we had every chance to be successful, I must respectfully decline."

Elliott, of 822 Shatzer Orchard Road in Chambersburg, cited family interests and his position as county chairman as reasons for not seeking the post. He also said congressional duties would take him away from home a minimum of 110 days and nights annually.

"It is interesting to note that my father, who was the last 9th District congressman to come from Franklin County, was selected as the Republican nominee at a meeting identical to this almost 41 years ago to the day," Elliott wrote Twigg.
