Comparisons of the cost of various heating fuels can be made on the basis of their heat equivalents as expressed in dollars per million Btu, according to the Maryland Cooperative Extension.

- Oak firewood, $120 cord, $10 per Mbtu.

- fuel oil, $1.60 per gallon, $17.84 per Mbtu.

- electric baseboard, $8.39 per kilowatt hour, $24.58 per Mbtu.

- electric heat pump, $3.36 per kilowatt hour, $9.84 per Mbtu.

- soft coal, $135 per ton, $9 per Mbtu.

- liquid propane gas, $1.75 per gallon, $28.95 per Mbtu.

- natural gas, 99 cents per hundred cubic feet, $15.23 per Mbtu.
