Mentzer makes Blue Devils' win a real steal

By DAN KAUFFMAN / Staff Writer

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Michelle Mentzer was accused of being a thief on Friday, and the senior didn't mind in the least.

"That's my thing, I love playing defense. I just love trying to steal the ball," Mentzer said.

Greencastle-Antrim's diminutive guard picked Big Spring apart, anchoring the Blue Devils' full court man-to-man pressure with 10 steals - including six in the decisive second quarter - and Greencastle held off two Bulldogs rallies in the second half for a 45-35 victory in the Mid Penn Colonial.

"She led that press like it's supposed to be done," Blue Devils coach Doug Stuart said. "She anticipates well, just like any thief does."

Mentzer finished with eight points and eight assists, but it was her six steals in the second quarter that gave Greencastle (7-9, 2-0) the boost it needed.

Trailing 11-10 entering the quarter, Mentzer opened the frame with three straight steals and turned them into six points on a field goal, two foul shots and an assist to Megan Wertner for a 16-11 lead.

The Blue Devils defense kept the clamps on Big Spring throughout the quarter, holding the Bulldogs to one field goal and three points while forcing 12 turnovers. Greencastle scored the last eight points of the second quarter for a 24-14 halftime lead.

"We just dominated in the second quarter with our man-to-man defense," Stuart said. "We wore them down."

Big Spring (1-11, 0-3) tested Greencastle twice in the second half. The Bulldogs cut the lead to four with a 12-6 run in the third quarter, but the Blue Devils answered with a 5-0 spurt on Mentzer's breakaway layup and Liz Rock's 3-pointer from the right corner off an inbounds play, giving Greencastle a 35-26 lead.

"When we went to that inbounds play, we ran it for her, and she has the green light," Stuart said. "She is our shooter, and she hit a big one."

Big Spring made one last run, scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter to cut Greencastle's lead to four again. The Blue Devils responded with a 6-0 run, on two jumpers from Jillian Leedy and one from Tamyra Toth to put the game away.

"This is a really good win for us," Mentzer said. "We needed a confidence boost. It was nice to see everyone play well together."
