Pa. home destroyed by fire

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Fire destroyed a family of four's Mercersburg home Friday night, said Fire Chief Nick Barbuzanes of the Mercersburg Montgomery Warren Peters Volunteer Fire Co.

Jay and Debra Schultz were at their 11545 Punchbowl Rd. home when the blaze started at about 6:30 p.m., Barbuzanes said.

There was "heavy fire" coming out of two rooms in the two-and-a-half story home when firefighters from five Franklin County, Pa. and Washington County fire companies arrived at the scene, he said.

"It got into the walls and the ceilings," Barbuzanes said. "There was too much fire for a little bit of rain to help at all."

The Schultzes were not injured but their home suffered about $60,000 in damage, he said.

The cause of the fire had not been determined as of late Friday, he said.

The American Red Cross has been notified about providing help for the family.
