20th Rebel Invitational begins today



Williamsport, coming off its third-place finish in last weekend's Hub Cup, is the favorite to win the 20th Rebel Invitational wrestling tournament, which begins today at 5:30 with preliminary, quarterfinal and quarterfinal consolation rounds at South Hagerstown High School.

The tournament picks up Saturday at 10 a.m. with the semifinals and the finals are scheduled for a 6:30 start.

Hedgesville, last year's champion, is participating in the Musselman tournament. This year's tournament will have 10 teams - Williamsport, South, Boonsboro, Catoctin, Thomas Johnson, Leonardtown, Judge Handley (Va.), Landsdowne, Liberty and Central Cambria (Pa.).

The Wildcats, second in last year's Rebel, return champion Ryan McDonald in the 275-pound division. The tournament will be seeded this afternoon.

Among Williamsport's wrestlers favored are McDonald, Steve Stone (130), Matt Allen (189) and McDonald. Stone finished second last year to Hedgesville's Daniel Lord. Allen was second at 162 to Handley's Justin Capone, the only other returning champion who will wrestle at 171 this year. Other Williamsport wrestlers who placed last year and returning this year are Corey Leggett (119) and Travis Brown (145).

Top area wrestlers returning are Todd Adkins (Catoctin, 112), Brandon Ashby (South, 119), Joe Esmont (TJ, 189) and Sal Mauriello (South, 189).
