Greencastle senior earns journalism internship

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A Greencastle-Antrim Senior High School senior has been named the grand-prize winner in Scholastic TAB's Upfront Journalism contest, an honor that will win him a three-day, all-expense-paid trip to New York City.

Matt Talhelm will be flown to New York to participate in a three-day internship with an editor from The New York Times Upfront magazine. He will interview and write about a celebrity for a story that will run in the magazine.

The New York Times Upfront magazine is co-published by The New York Times newspaper and Scholastic Books.

Betsy Howie of Scholastic Books, in a press release about Talhelm's selection, said the articles he submitted for the contest "spoke to a vast array of issues from technology in schools to sports to health issues. Matt's exceptional use of language and structure really made his entry stand out from the rest."

Martina Fegan, his English teacher at Greencastle-Antrim High School, said in the release that Talhelm "has an extraordinary way with words. His distinct style and flair is evident in both his creative writing and in more structured forms. It is no surprise to me that his entry was selected for this honor."
