Rife picks up Trojans

Hoover chases loose ballCHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Chambersburg girls basketball coach Ken Stepler sometimes would like senior Heather Rife to shoot the ball more during a game.

Tuesday night against Carlisle, she showed why.

The 5-foot-11 Rife still kept everyone else involved with four assists, but went 13-for-18 from the field on the way to a career-high 30 points as the Trojans opened the second half of the Mid Penn Commonwealth with a convincing 74-46 victory.

"It just seemed like it was all smooth out there," said Rife, who added nine rebounds. "My confidence was there; when I kept shooting, I hit it."

She went 5-for-5 in the first period and made three free throws to outscore the Herd by herself. Up 32-22 midway through the second quarter, the Trojans (10-4, 1-0) took off, naturally, behind Rife. Chambersburg went on a 27-0 run over the next 8 1/2 minutes, keyed by 13 points from the senior on a variety of jump shots and left-handed layups.

"Heather, sometimes she lays back and makes sure to get others involved," Stepler said. "Tonight, she showed what she can do when she wants to be a shooter and a scorer."

The rest of her teammates showed what they could do as well to help snap a two-game losing streak. Jen Schmutzler went 3-for-5 from 3-point range on the way to 13 points, Sara Cook had seven assists and center Shelly Felix played through a blow to the head and a changed uniform for 10 points and five rebounds.

"We really needed one like that," Stepler said. "We'd been beat around a little because of the schedule ... but I thought everybody played real well today."

Especially Rife.
