Allen steals the show at Hub Cup

Yes, it's North Hagerstown High School but on Saturday night, it belonged to Williamsport's Matt Allen.

The junior, wrestling in the 189-pound division of the 14th Hub Cub Invitational, knocked off highly-touted Brendan McCarron of Gaithersburg 3-1 in overtime.

Four other area wrestlers - Steve Stone of Williamsport, Wayne Boward and Chad Coles of North and Akil Patterson of Frederick - also came away with Hub gold. Meanwhile, Paint Branch easily won the team title with 263 points. Damascus was second with 208.5. Williamsport (189.5) was third and North (181) was fourth.

But it was Allen's gold which shined the brightest this night. Allen defeated Paint Branch's Matt Stewart, a sixth-place winner at 189 in Md. 3A/4A last year, with a pin in 4:26 in the semifinals setting the stage for the bout against McCarron, a fifth-place winner at 171 in Md. 3A/4A last year.

Allen was the aggressor throughout. Still, he could not score an offensive point against McCarron in regulation.

"I was getting deep on my double but he was so strong," Allen said.

After the wrestlers exchanged escape points in regulation, Allen went for his double-leg takedown again in overtime. Persistence paid off.

"I was able to wrap my arms around him and get a bearhug," Allen said. "Then I tripped him."

Like his teammate, Stone garnered his first Hub Cup title parlaying a second-period reversal for a 2-0 win over Walkersville's Jason Gladhill.

"No, it wasn't the match I wanted, but it's a win," Stone said. "People were telling me I had this, but I knew he was a tough wrestler."

Coles posted a 6-1 decision at 215 - a weight class not recognized by the state - over Craig Lawrence of Paint Branch. Coles scored with an escape, four stalling points and a penalty point.

"I like 215 because it allows me to wrestle guys my size," Coles said. "Last year, I was fourth wrestling at 275. This was a lot easier for me."

Boward nearly pinned Magruder's Todd Lerner at the end of the first period but used double arm bars to turn him for a fall at 3:47 in the night's final bout. This is Boward's third Hub Cup title, but first as a Hub. His first two were while wrestling for Williamsport.

"I didn't like wrestling at the end," Boward said. "It made me want to get it over with even quicker."

Patterson defeated Williamsport's Ryan McDonald 7-3 using a tactic not embraced by the partisan Williamsport crowd.

"I let him shoot on me, and then I tried to throw him," Patterson said. "He's beaten me four years with his shot and I worked on it over the summer to counter his shot."
