Hagerstown woman crowned Miss Berkeley County

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Toni Alicia Rickard was crowned Miss Berkeley County Saturday night at the Apollo Civic Theatre.

Rickard, a 23-year-old junior at Shepherd College, sang a portion of Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro."

She is the daughter of James and Suzanne Rickard of Hagerstown.

She received her crown from Kristi Chrisman, Miss Berkeley County 2000.

For winning the title Saturday night, she received a $1,000 scholarship, a $500 scholarship from Shepherd College, gift certificates and the chance to participate in the Miss West Virginia Scholarship Pageant in June in Clarksburg, W.Va.

Five contestants competed for the crown.

First runner-up was Sheri Lynn Grippo of Charles Town, W.Va., a 19-year-old freshman at West Virginia University. She performed a dramatic monologue from the anonymous diary "Go Ask Alice" during the talent competition.

She is the daughter of Mario and Doris Grippo of Charles Town.

She received a $300 scholarship.

Whitney Whittaker, 17, of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., a senior at Jefferson High School, received the $100 nonfinalist interview award and the $50 nonfinalist talent award. She twirled three batons to "Great Balls of Fire."

She is the daughter of Charles and Brenda Whittaker of Shenandoah Junction.

The other contestants were:

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> Lisa DeGrave, 17, of Kearneysville, W.Va., a senior at Jefferson High School. She is the daughter of Dale and Jeanne DeGrave of Kearneysville.

HEIGHT="6" ALT="* "> Jeneva Marie Wheeler, 19, of Rippon, W.Va., a 1999 graduate of Jefferson High School and a sophomore at Shepherd College. She is the daughter of Gregory and Margaret Wheeler of Rippon.

The theme for the 25th Miss Berkeley County Scholarship Pageant was "Ladies Night."

Miss Georgia Pamela Kennedy was mistress of ceremonies.

Performers included the Miss Berkeley County Dancers, Miss Berkeley County 1989 Aimee Myers Peters, Miss Berkeley County 1990 Michelle Tallent Mange, Miss Berkeley County 1991 Dawn Rix, Kennedy and Chrisman.
