Friends of South Mountain hold meeting

The Friends of South Mountain State Battlefield held their first meeting Saturday and have scheduled another for Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. at the Greenbrier State Park Visitor Center.

The meeting is open to the public.

The group will help the state interpret the Civil War battle at South Mountain and other events. Interpretive centers are planned in existing buildings at Gathland and Washington Monument parks.

The Friends of South Mountain Battlefield is the new name for the Friends of Gathland State Park, also known as FOG.

Sharon Schroebel, a former FOG board member, said the name change enables the group to broaden its activities and increases membership opportunities.

FOG had about 43 active members. About 15 people showed up for the Saturday meeting, Schroebel said.

The South Mountain State Battlefield was created last summer by the state to protect, preserve and interpret the Civil War battle that took place there Sept. 14, 1862.
