Town newsletter editor to be paid for work

SHARPSBURG - The Sharpsburg Town Council agreed this week to add Town Crier editor Jan Wetterer to the town's payroll.

"We decided to give her a regular salary and thanked her for her volunteer years," said Mayor Sid Gale.

Wetterer will be paid $7 an hour, Gale said.

Wetterer said she has voluntarily operated Town Crier, the monthly town newsletter, since the first issue in February 1991. She estimates she spends about 15 hours a month working on the newsletter.

The town paying her was Gale's suggestion, Wetterer said.

The town has paid for equipment, supplies and postage, Councilwoman Denise Troxell said.

Approximately 285 issues of the Town Crier are distributed. Town residents get the newsletter free.

The council discussed the issue in closed session Monday night before voting 6-0 in a public session to add Wetterer to the payroll, Gale said.
