MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Once St. Maria Goretti's girls basketball team got the lead against Mercersburg in the first half Wednesday, senior Lauren Costello made absolutely sure the Gaels kept it.

Goretti capitalized on several Mercersburg turnovers in transition during the second quarter to build a 12-point halftime lead, then Costello went to work down low, finishing with a triple-double as the Gaels turned back the Blue Storm, 57-42.

"I just felt I was playing 100 percent in the first half," Costello said after scoring 16 of her 22 points in the second half to go with an eye-popping 20 rebounds and 16 blocked shots. "I had to step my game up a notch, step up for my team."

"I thought Costello controlled the game in every area," Goretti coach Todd Rideout said. "She kept us in it on defense, and those blocks kept us in the game."

Tied at 11-11 after the first quarter, the Gaels (7-5) and Blue Storm (2-4) combined for eight turnovers in the first 70 seconds of the second period. But Goretti outscored Mercersburg 15-3 in the period, getting three baskets directly off steals while the Blue Storm missed numerous opportunities within three feet, while making only 1 of 7 foul shots in the quarter and 7 of 22 in the game.

"We capitalized on their mistakes and got some easy buckets," Rideout said.

"They made the inside shots, and we missed too many," Mercersburg coach Carl Muller said.

The Gaels extended their lead to 36-16 with a 10-0 run early in the third quarter before Mercersburg answered with a 12-4 run of its own to cut the lead to 12.

But Costello, playing with four fouls through the entire fourth quarter, blocked shot after shot in the paint down the stretch, and the Blue Storm could get no closer than 10 points.

Point guard Brett Stone had 14 points, 13 rebounds and six assists for Goretti. June Marquiss led Mercersburg with 19 points, most off offensive rebounds as she battled all night against Costello.
