Blaze destroys club in Berkeley County

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A fire from a deep fryer spread through the Club Shamrock along U.S. 11 North Wednesday afternoon, destroying the longtime landmark.

Pam Jarinko, one of the owners of the club, had been talking with a vendor in the bar when she noticed the fire about 4 p.m., said Robbie Robinson, chief of the Bedington Volunteer Fire Department.

Jarinko's father used a fire extinguisher to attack the fire, Robinson said. When the fire extinguisher was empty, the fire flared up and continued to spread, Robinson said.

When firefighters arrived, the lounge was engulfed in flames, Robinson said.

"They're going to have to level it and start all over because there is nothing left of it," Robinson said Wednesday night.

About 25 firefighters worked more than an hour to bring the blaze under control, Robinson said. The Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co. and the Martinsburg Fire Department also helped battle the blaze, Robinson said.

Firefighters remained at the scene until 8 p.m., he said.

Club Shamrock is below the old railroad overpass on U.S. 11. Robinson said the club had been there for about 20 years.
