Sharpsburg swears in two council members

SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Town Councilman Hal Spielman was sworn in as vice mayor Monday night, filling a position that had been vacant since Sept. 11, Councilwoman Denise Troxell said.

Spielman has served on the Town Council since January 1997.

The vice mayoral post was vacated on Sept. 11, when Sidney Gale took over as mayor after George Kesler resigned. The vice mayoral job will be open again in the 2002 election.

Councilman Ralph Hammond and newcomer J.W. Eichelberger also were sworn in as council members at Monday night's monthly council meeting. Council members serve four-year terms.

Hammond, who has served on the council since 1972, was re-elected last fall.

Eichelberger was appointed to the council vacancy created when Spielman was appointed vice mayor.
