Fire kills two cats, destroys home

Pope Ave. fire

A Hagerstown family was left homeless and two cats perished in a Pope Avenue fire Monday afternoon, firefighters said.

The fire at 1005 Pope Avenue broke out when the owner, Steve Eichelberger, his wife and two children were not home, according to firefighters.

Battalion Chief Ron Horn said when firefighters arrived at 12:20 p.m. flames and heavy smoke was pouring out the back of the two-story home.

Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours, he said.

He estimated that the fire caused $85,000 in damages to the home.
