HCC women win in OT

Robin Curley was ready to do some extra work Monday night.

She scored all seven of her points during the overtime period to enable Hagerstown Community College to nip the Montgomery/Takoma Park Falcons 75-71 in a Maryland JuCo Conference women's basketball game.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Hagerstown (5-5 overall, 3-2 conference).

The Hawks outscored the Falcons 13-9 during the overtime.

"Coach (Marlys Palmer) just told us to go in and play hard," Curley said. "My baskets had a lot to do with some nice passes. They were looking for an open person and it just happened to be me. Everything just fell into place. Coach told us we had to pull together."

Curley, a 6-foot-1 freshman forward, scored seven of the Hawks' first 10 points in overtime to give them a 72-64 lead with 1:28 remaining. However, the Falcons rallied to narrow the gap to 74-71 with 36 seconds to go. HCC point guard Rachel Bachtell made the first of two foul shots with 18 seconds left to give HCC the final margin.

"It was a real big win for this team," Palmer said. "We shot the best that we had all season at 40 percent. We also got 50 rebounds and 20 assists. All of these things were season highs.

"Our players just gave a lot of effort tonight. We worked and worked and worked. I am proud of my girls for how hard that they fought. We just got a lot of help from a lot of people."

HCC had two players that finished with double-doubles. Forward Vennece Fowlkes collected 13 points and 15 rebounds, while center Amy Fischer added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Fowlkes also had six assists.

Guard Emily Middlekauff finished with a team-high 16 points and six rebounds, while forward Brooke Russ added eight rebounds, five assists and four steals for HCC.
