HCC women lose fourth straight

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

The early part of the 2000-2001 women's basketball season has been a period of streaks for the Hagerstown Community College Hawks.

HCC rebounded from a season-opening loss to win four straight games. Since then, HCC has gone from one extreme to another as it has lost four straight games to see its overall record plunge from 4-1 to 4-5.

The Hawks' latest loss came on Saturday afternoon when it was dismantled by the Mitchell (Conn.) Pequots 89-57 during the second day of the Hagerstown Community College Women's Basketball Tournament.

Hagerstown once again dug itself into a deep hole during the first half and that enabled Mitchell (9-4) to build a 45-26 halftime lead.

Even though they are in a slump, coach Marlys Palmer feels that the Hawks still have some potential.

"We did have five people that shot better than 40 percent from the floor," Palmer said. "I felt that we had a really good effort against this team. Hopefully, this will be something that we can build on. There is a lot of inexperience on the team and the freshmen are making adjustments."

Power forward LaRonda Garrett led Mitchell with 21 points and eight rebounds. Sarah Craft and Raeann Boutiller scored 16 points each for Mitchell.

Brooke Russ had 15 points and seven rebounds, while Vennece Fowlkes added 11 rebounds and 11 points on 50 percent shooting from the floor. Rachel Bachtell had four assists and three steals for the Hawks.

"We basically have been working on our man-to-man defense for the last couple of weeks," Mitchell coach Cas Grygorcewicz said. "We got a lot of transition baskets off of some steals today."

In the opening game of the mixer, the Lackawanna (Pa.) Lady Falcons played all but the first 4:32 of the contest with just four players after power forward Shermaine Drake dislocated her left knee. Lackawanna was only trailing 57-50 with 7:53 remaining in the game. But the Frederick Cougars eventually pulled away with an 80-57 victory.
