Hawks get enough time

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Gebront Gaddy scored a layup off Eric Branham's slash and pass with three seconds remaining as undermanned Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team took advantage of a new version of the "Chris Webber" rule to pull out a 85-84 victory over Montgomery-Rockville.

HCC (12-2) dressed just nine after losing five players to ineligibility. A sixth - Julius Gause - was benched for returning to the team after the holiday reporting deadline.

The Hawks led until the 11-minute mark of the first half when Rockville moved to a 26-25 lead, building to a 51-42 halftime lead.

HCC came back to tie with 10 minutes remaining and set up a see-saw battle for the rest of the game.

Eric Branham tied the game at 83-83 with :08 remaining. In the ensuing inbounds pass, Bayi Handy stole the ball and called a timeout that HCC didn't own. The Hawks were assessed a one-shot technical foul, hit by Jeffery Buckles to give Rockville a 84-83 lead.

Under the old rule, Rockville would get two foul shots and the ball. But the revision gave Rockville a foul shot and returned the ball to HCC under its basket, giving the Hawks time to map out a final play the Gaddy completed for the win.

Branham led the Hawks with 18 points while Handy added a career-high 15 and Gaddy added 17. Derek Hoffman had 10 rebounds while Gaddy added 12 rebounds and five steals.
