SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - A Jefferson County man was pronounced dead after being found unconscious in a bathroom at the Sheetz convenience store on W.Va. 45 Saturday night, said Jefferson County Sheriff Everett "Ed" Boober.

The 37-year-old white male went into the bathroom after he and his girlfriend entered the store about 11:15 p.m., Boober said.

People began expressing concern for the man after he didn't come out of the bathroom - which was locked from the inside - for about 20 minutes, Boober said.

Members of the Shepherdstown Fire Department arrived and removed the bathroom door from its hinges, Boober said.

The man was unconscious, and medical crews began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Boober said.

The man was taken to City Hospital near Martinsburg, W.Va., where he was pronounced dead, Boober said.

The case is currently being investigated as an "unattended death," said Boober, adding that he did not believe any foul play was involved.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the man's death, although it hard to determine exactly what caused the death, Boober said.

The body will likely be sent to a state Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy, Boober said.

Boober said he could not release the man's name because next of kin had not been notified as of Sunday afternoon.
