Fearsome foursome lifts Hubs over Rebels

By ADELINE STAEBLER / Staff Correspondent

While North wrestling coach Greg Slick is hesitant to make a huge deal out of Jimmy Starkey (135), Scott Greenwald (140), Wayne Boward (145) and Dustin McDonough (152), he admits that he can almost always count on them to win.

The foursome pulled out the pins Friday night to lead the Hubs over South Hagerstown, 48-17.

"I think that's the strength of our lineup. We can really count on those guys every night to be able to go out and wrestle well and get us six points," Slick said. "I'm not going to call them a murderer's row or anything like that, but we kind of feel that if we're in good shape when we get to that point, we're going to be able to score some points."

South led 11-6 going into the 135 bout, but Starkey pinned Justin Oberosler in 1:24 to put the Hubs ahead, 12-11. Greenwald then pinned Tony Blakney in 3:00, Boward pinned Emmens Rho in 1:21 and McDonough pinned Adam Hutchins in 1:09 as the Hubs took control, 30-11.

"I just went out and did my best," McDonough (11-6) said. "I was just trying to get it over with quick because I knew the team needed a boost of energy."

The Hubs (8-0) also got pins from Jason Hinkle (160), Brian Hayes (171) and Chad Coles (275).

North's Mike Wagner (103) had a win. Steve Fravel (119) had a 14-9 decision over South's Brandon Ashby (9-1) for Ashby's first loss of the year.

"I just think the way (Brandon) wrestles, he goes so hard that when you overdo, the technique goes out the door," South coach Brian Brake said. "He just upped the intensity to a point where his technique fell a little short of where it should be."

Chad Sweigert (112) had a 16-0 tech fall for the Rebels (2-4). Terry Jones (125) and Tony Bowers (130) each had wins for South. Sal Mauriello (189) pinned Quentin Campbell in 5:03 for the Rebels' only pin.

"(Campbell) tries to counter everything to a headlock, so after the first time I went to shoot on him, he caught me on a headlock, put me on my back. I got out of that and I told myself that I wasn't going to let him put me in a headlock again," Mauriello (7-2) said.
