HCC women lose to Lackawanna in mixer opener

By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent

The Hagerstown Community College women's basketball team outnumbered Lackawanna, but the Hawks couldn't outscore it.

HCC dressed 13 players to Lackawanna's six, but there wasn't much safety to be found in numbers. Lackawanna outscored the Hawks 39-15 by halftime Friday before cruising to a 82-52 victory during the first round of a mixer tournament at HCC's athletic complex.

"We're shooting poorly the whole way through the ballclub," HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. "We're only averaging 30 percent shooting from the floor and we are averaging 24 turnovers a game. It is real hard to win a basketball game, especially if you're not rebounding."

Lackawanna did everything it wanted. It out rebounded HCC 29-13 and held the Hawks to just 15 percent shooting during the first 20 minutes of play.

In Friday's other game, the Frederick Community College Cougars edged the Mitchell (Conn.) College, 72-68.

The mixer tournament concludes today with Lackawanna (11-2) facing Frederick (7-4) at 1 p.m., followed by Mitchell (8-4) meeting HCC (4-4) in the nightcap.

Palmer was optimistic of the Hawks' play despite the loss.

"I thought that the second half wasn't a bad half of basketball," Palmer said. "In the second half, we got beat by six points. We're just pretty young and we have a lot to learn. I think that we'll get better as the season goes along."

Keona Dessau collected 23 points and six rebounds, while reserve Tara Keating scored 19 points for Lackawanna. Kristyn Grzenda added 12 points and seven rebounds, Amy Pearson added 11 points and eight rebounds and Shermaine Drake had 12 points for Lackawanna.

Emily Middlekauff topped HCC with 13 points. Vennece Fowlkes and reserve Tiffany Tucker added 10 points each for the Hawks.

"We're a pretty athletic team and a good rebounding team," Lackawanna coach Mike Bartoletti said. "We are active and we go after the ball."

Point guard Dani Thomas scored 24 points, while reserve Lauri Parson and Ebony Bowers added 14 points each to lead Frederick to victory over Mitchell.

Mitchell center Cherelle Payne collected 16 rebounds and 16 points. Sarah Craft scored 18 points and Lauren Minholz added 13 points for Mitchell.
